The testing of gas appliances, gas furnaces and fittings is the main task of the Testing Laboratory. This also includes the approval and testing of gas appliances, equipment, fittings and quality management systems. This supplies the prerequisites for certification by DVGW CERT GmbH (German Technical and Scientific Association for Gas and Water) (CE label, DIN-DVGW label, DVGW gas quality label).
In addition, the VDE label and the EMC label for gas appliances are issued for electrical and EMC testing in cooperation with the VDE Testing and Certification Institute.
The testing laboratory has many years of experience and comprehensive knowledge in the assessment of all devices and equipment for gas use, which must comply with the recognized rules of technology according to the legal regulations. GWI has additional know-how in the assessment of various building products and firing systems.
Depending on the situation, the tests are carried out at the customer's premises or at the Gas- und Wärme-Institut.
The projects are worked on across borders and in cooperation with partners from business, science and industry, but also with committees, associations, cities and networks. The aim here is to exchange synergies and use them more efficiently; the research results benefit the member companies, partners and customers and strengthen their competitiveness, both nationally and internationally.
The innovation and research projects are carried out by the R&D departments "Fuel and Appliance Technology" and "Industrial and Combustion Technology"; these have various experimental and test facilities, modern measuring technology and extensive simulation programs.
One task of the GWI's statutory non-profit offerings is to conduct continuing education events in which interested persons can participate. This offer has already existed for decades and is carried out in close coordination and cooperation with the associations, authorities and institutions of the German gas industry. Since 2016, an educational alliance has additionally been established with the DVGW and the rbv with the aim of providing the industry with a coordinated, modular program for professional qualification that complies with the regulations.
