The Energy-Institute in Essen
QUALITY, SAFETY, INNOVATION
Only those who think holistically can deliver good work. As such, GWI's activities today cover all relevant focus areas:
These areas complement each other in an ideal way – for instance, when research projects trigger safety checks and analyses by the testing lab and the training center subsequently provides training for the operating personnel of the relevant systems. This is then further disseminated to wider interested circles through cluster and network management.
“These synergies make GWI's work so effective and valuable for the entire energy sector. No knowledge is lost here. On the contrary, knowledge is expanded upon, resulting in growing enrichment.”
Research and development are GWI's specialty. This is where GWI feels at home, with passion, unique experience, and consolidated competence in Germany.
GWI mainly focuses on application technology topics – ranging from burner and component development, gas installations, concepts of decentralized electricity and heat generation, energy system analysis, heat, electricity, and gas networks, including gases from renewable sources like biogas and hydrogen combined with other renewable sources.
State-of-the-art test rigs and measurement equipment are available, which can be used directly on customer systems for simulation validation.
GWI is the point of contact for publicly funded projects in EU, federal, and state research programs, as well as industrial projects and sought-after engineering services in technical-economic issues. This applies to both traditional gas applications and fuels or energies from renewable sources.
Apart from research projects, questions about energy savings, heat recovery, pollutant reduction, and efficiency improvement are handled as industrial commissioned work, with solutions developed. Additionally, there are consultations, burner tests, numerical simulations, and expert activities for various industries.
Research fields encompass all industries where the combustion of gaseous fuels plays a role in heating and further processing of everyday products. This primarily includes the glass, steel, non-ferrous metal, power plant, gas turbine, chemical, and ceramic industries.
The main focus is on improving the efficiency of entire systems and individual units and minimizing pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions such as NOx and CO2.
All activities and research findings are presented at national and international levels through presentations and publications in scientific and other relevant journals.
In all areas, GWI has high-quality, qualified scientific and technical personnel. Thanks to its close ties with universities in the Ruhr area, the employment of motivated students and graduates, GWI trains the next generation of highly skilled engineers and scientists.
The high quality of research and development work at GWI is further emphasized by numerous doctoral degrees.
