Hydrogen at GWI
Power-to-Methane Potential 2050 - STORE&GO © GWI

The close integration of the research and development departments, training center, and testing laboratory has established GWI as a pioneer and competent point of contact for all aspects related to the world of hydrogen.

GWI addresses the entire hydrogen value chain, from production to transport and end-use, through comprehensive system analyses and investigations of individual aspects. In addition to feasibility and potential studies, GWI conducts experimental research on hydrogen utilization in end applications in the heat and industrial sectors. The spectrum ranges from test rigs for small fuel cells with capacities below 1 kW to semi-industrial high-temperature test rigs up to 1.3 MW. GWI tests components, fittings, appliances, and CHP plants up to 100% hydrogen with a combustion capacity of up to 500 kW. GWI also uses state-of-the-art CFD modeling to analyze the impact of hydrogen on technical combustion processes.

The utilization of hydrogen is addressed in projects such as the "DVGW-Roadmap Gas 2050" and the European project "THyGA." The projects "Fahrplan Gaswende" and "HyBEST" represent a system-analytical approach and sector coupling, while "TransHyDE - Wasserstoffzentrum Mukran" focuses on researching innovative storage and transportation solutions.
