The development of the current energy supply system, which is still dominated by fossil fuels, into a fully climate-neutral system is underway. Identifying the optimal development paths in the trade-off between reliable, ecological, and economical energy provision puts both individual energy carriers and technologies to the test. The optimized coordination of technologies and supply tasks requires the consistent utilization of synergies through the combination of established and innovative technologies. The goal is to create a highly efficient, resilient, and flexibly interconnected energy system.

GWI has been working on the production, distribution, and utilization of gases from renewable sources for years. This includes both partially or fully upgraded biogases as well as green hydrogen and power-to-gas products. The portfolio of GWI's investigations also includes electrical energy from photovoltaic and wind power systems, as well as energy storage. GWI assesses potentials at the municipal, regional, and national levels, conducts site analyses, and develops optimal solutions, taking into account the infrastructure of electricity, heat, and gas networks.
